The importance of growing our own fruit and veges organically was stressed, with slides of research showing the effects of pesticides on children&#8217;s cognitive development &amp; the links between commonly used organo-phosphates in agriculture to ADHD and learning difficulties.\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">They<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">learnt<\/span>\u00a0how Round Up was found in the urine of every subject tested ( 1000 + people in Germany)<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">and\u00a0<\/span>saw how plantations of soy, palm oil and timber cutting are destroying the lungs of our Earth ( the rain forests ) at a rate of 6000 acres per hour. This loss of vegetation, and the burning of fossil fuel has resulted in serious climate change already. Facilitator Bee Winfield said &#8221; Conventional Agriculture is a major contributor to GHG , and a dying occupation, however organic growing can save the Earth.\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">She stressed that\u00a0<\/span>through our buying habits<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0<\/span>&#8220;we create the world we want.<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">&#8220;<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i>Bee said\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">&#8220;A<\/span>rtificial fertiliser is not only contributing to climate change and air pollution by its manufacture<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">, but when<\/span>\u00a0appli<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">ed<\/span>\u00a0to soils<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">, \u00a0kill<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">s<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0off the soil food web.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\"><b>This is<\/b><\/span><b>\u00a0why foods are so low in minerals compared to 30 years ago. She said &#8220;The marketing to children of junk ( processed) foods is really killing our children and our planet. Obesity alone is bankrupting our health system.&#8221;<\/b><\/i><br \/>\n<i>A slide of an orang-outang clinging to a lone tree after bulldozers clear felled several square miles of his rainforest home for palm oil,<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0<\/span>prompted Yvonne to share how her partner &amp; son were currently trekking in a Malaysian rainforest &amp; had\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">visited a tribe<\/span>\u00a0whose children are sick and dying from the poisoned creeks flowing from the palm plantations. Th<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">e<\/span>\u00a0point was\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">brought home<\/span>\u00a0by an array of left over\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">snack\u00a0<\/span>chips, waves and rings from a function hel<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">d in the same hall\u00a0<\/span>the night before<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">.<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i>After a lot of grim news, came the exciting news that our farms and gardens can become healthy eco systems which rely on a web of pest and predator. The group was encouraged to view a pest outbreak as a breeding ground for predators, and shown how to bring insect eating birds, reptiles and bats to\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">their horticultures<\/span>. The &#8220;soil food web&#8221; contains 1\/3 of all living things on Earth. Tilling and use of fungicides\u00a0<span style=\"background-color:white;background-position:initial initial;background-repeat:initial initial;\">annihilates<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">important\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">microscopic\u00a0<\/span>life<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0forms<\/span>.\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">Bee claims that\u00a0<\/span>\u00a03 years\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">or less\u00a0<\/span>after conversion to organics a farmer will find no use for chemicals and use less fuel.<\/i><br \/>\n<i><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">The<\/span>\u00a0school kindly lent Bee an older microscope for the workshop,\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">to<\/span><span style=\"background-color:white;background-position:initial initial;background-repeat:initial initial;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"background-color:white;background-position:initial initial;background-repeat:initial initial;\">analyse<\/span>\u00a0soil from the community garden pathways and compare it to soil microbes in composted beds. Unfortunately we lacked magnification and couldn&#8217;t see much, although<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0a<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">Manjimup<\/span>\u00a0boy managed to focus in on a leaf, to his joy. An aerobic compost heap teems with &#8220;good guy &#8221; microbes and we saw\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">microscopic\u00a0<\/span>slides of a bad bug nematode being lassoed by a fungal hypha. We then saw a tomato root unprotected by mychorrizal fungi with a root eating nematode going right in to feed! There<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0were also slides of\u00a0<\/span>predatory nematodes which consume root feeders types\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">.<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i>The workshop culminated in a compost tea brewing demonstration. After a few days aeration the tea is full of beneficial bugs which when sprayed out on the leaves and soil can\u00a0<span style=\"background-color:white;background-position:initial initial;background-repeat:initial initial;\">&#8220;miraculously&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0improve soil structure and water logging, get rid of pesticide residues,<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0<\/span>prevent nutrient and lime applicatons leaching away, increase nutrients in plants (because the microbes dissolve minerals from our sand, silt and clay and hold them near the plant roots in plant available form), and reduce watering costs by up to 70%.\u00a0A well fed plant does not send out stress signals which attract &#8221; Natures Garbage Collectors&#8221;\u2026\u2026 the pests and diseases. The reasons why properly made compost gives plants resistance to pests and disease are only now coming to light with the advent of the electron microscope.<\/i><\/p>\n<table class=\"tr-caption-container\" style=\"clear:right;float:right;margin-bottom:1em;text-align:center;\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td style=\"text-align:center;\"><a style=\"margin-left:auto;margin-right:auto;\" href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/merribee.swcomputerlab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/660a9-iillioochenwongandleetaylor.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/merribee.swcomputerlab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/660a9-iillioochenwongandleetaylor.jpg?resize=640%2C360&#038;ssl=1\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td class=\"tr-caption\" style=\"text-align:center;\">Two \u00a0brave little boys , one clearing the swale as the \u00a0big boar \u00a0they were feeding some oats rose to his feet!!<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><i>On the Sunday ,16 participants coming from as far away as Perth, Collie, Donnybrook, Bridgetown, Northcliffe and Manjimup attended the Swale workshop.\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">They\u00a0<\/span>were pleasantly surprised to learn\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">about\u00a0<\/span>the myriad of benefits th<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">is<\/span>\u00a0cheap, easy<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0&amp;<\/span>\u00a0quick water harvesting installation<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0can bring\u00a0<\/span>. After the workshop the group car pooled to Merri Bee Organic Farm to see the good growth of citrus and cattle fodder trees on 5 young swales.\u00a0<span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">The sun shone for the first time all weekend on the sparkling water of the Blackwood river\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">flowing by.<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">visitors were charmed by the\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">sights,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">scents and sounds of spring on the f<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">arm, and<\/span><span style=\"color:#1f497d;\">\u00a0were all very grateful to Bee and \u00a0Well Being Warren Blackwood who funded the workshops.<\/span><\/i><br \/>\n<i>&#8221;\u00a0<b>The secret Life of Soil &#8221; series\u00a0<\/b>, exploring how to make good compost and teas from it \u00a0will be an\u00a0extraordinarily\u00a0educational day at the farm commencing on \u00a0 November 2nd. Home gardeners and farmers will learn \u00a0more profitable ways to grow healthy productive plants. This will cost $60.00 with optional lunch from the farm of $15.00, all organic of course.
